Snow Removal Operations

The Shelbyville Street Department works diligently to ensure our roads are safe and passable during winter weather events. Below is an overview of our snow removal process, key strategies, and tips for residents during snow events.

Pre-Treatment with Brine

To prepare for snow and ice, we use a brine solution (water mixed with 24% salt content). This brine is blended on-site at our facility, as is common with most municipalities.

  • Approximately 4,000 gallons (35,000 lbs) of brine are applied to roads in advance.
  • This pre-treatment helps prevent snow and ice from bonding to the pavement, making it easier to clear the roads once the storm begins.

Snow Removal Approach

Each snow event is unique, and we tailor our strategy to the conditions:

  1. Timing of Plowing and Salting

    • For larger storms: We begin plowing once 2-3 inches of snow have accumulated.
    • For smaller storms on workdays: We start by salting when about 1 inch has fallen.
    • Primary streets and intersections are prioritized for plowing and salting.
  2. Equipment Deployment

    • Six trucks will operate in designated zones across the city.
    • An articulated loader will manage wider and longer roads, including Progress Parkway, East Michigan Road, and Lee Boulevard.
  3. Shift Scheduling

    • Crews will work 12-hour shifts and continue until all streets are cleared.
  4. Downtown Snow Removal

    • Downtown parking areas and sidewalks will be addressed as snow tapers off.

Trash and Recycling Pickup Adjustments

Inclement weather may impact trash and recycling collection schedules.

  • If trash and recycling are not collected on your scheduled day (e.g., Monday), we will aim to pick them up the following day, along with that day’s regular route.

Resident Tips for Snowstorms

  • Driveway Clearing: Avoid clearing your driveway near the street until plowing is completed.
    • Tip: Place snow on the right-hand side (when facing the road) to reduce the likelihood of snow being pushed back into your driveway.
  • Contractor Responsibility: Contractors or residents who plow snow into the street must remove the snow they leave behind.

  • Sidewalks: Please assist in keeping sidewalks clear for pedestrians after snow events.

Our team is committed to ensuring safe travel throughout Shelbyville, and we appreciate your cooperation during these efforts. For additional updates or questions, please contact the Street Department.
